About the event
Join local artist Mālie Moana for a hands-on week of creativity, carving, and printmaking! Teens will learn how to transform their own drawings into unique block-print designs, carve their own stamps, and bring their artwork to life on fabric.
High school students will receive step-by-step instruction in block carving and fabric printing, including tips for caring for their finished pieces so they can last. On printing days, students will also have access to Mālie’s collection of Hilo-inspired block prints to create one-of-a-kind designs on provided totes, paper, and fabric—or bring their own clothing to upcycle and customize.
By the end of the week, students will take home their handmade stamps, finished artwork, and newly upcycled pieces.

About the Artist: Mālie Moana is the umbrella in which its namesake, Mālie (Holt-Mizuguchi) Barca, operates under. What started as a career in block printing naturally grew into "up-cycling workshops" featuring originally carved block print pieces to help others repurpose their clothing items and embrace the beauty in having a hand in what you wear on your body. Growing up Hawaiian in Hilo, Hawaii afforded a lot of inspiration for what would eventually be the guiding force behind all her ideas and designs. Caring for what we have is a theme she carries in both her block print art and her workshops.
